A Pantry Guide

26 Things I MUST have:
  • Kosher salt
  • Baking powder
  • Baking soda
  • Cocoa Powder
  • Butter
  • Dried Milk
  • Active Dry Yeast
  • Sugar
  • Black peppercorns
  • Honey
  • Canned whole tomatoes
  • Tomato paste
  • Olive oil
  • Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese
  • Eggs
  • Lemons
  • Onions
  • Garlic
  • Cinnamon
  • Cumin
  • Long grain rice
  • All-purpose flour
  • Chicken broth
  • Dijon mustard
  • Dried black beans
  • Dried pasta
I could make 6 meals with only the ingredients in that left hand column:
  • #1 - Flour, yeast, salt, honey, garlic = loaf of italian bread
Tomatoes, tomato paste, olive oil and garlic = spaghetti sauce
Cooked pasta, Parmegiano = Spaghetti Dinner

  • #2 - Flour, yeast, salt, honey = loaf of bread
Egg, lemon juice, olive oil, mustard = mayonaise
Hard boiled eggs, onion, salt, pepper = Egg Salad Sandwich

  • #3 - Cooked Black Beans, rice, onion, cumin, garlic,
salt, pepper = Beans and Rice

  • #4 - Flour, salt, egg = homemade egg noodles
Egg noodles + Chicken broth = Chicken Noodle Soup

  • #5 - homemade egg noodles + chicken broth, eggs
and lemons = Avgolemono Soup (served with left over bread)

  • #6 - Flour, yeast, salt, honey, garlic = Pizza Crust
Canned Tomatoes + Parmegiano = Cheeze Pizza
I could make many quick breads and desserts:
  • Flour, leavening, eggs, fat (butter, margarine, shortening, or oil), and liquid such as milk, baking soda, baking powder and salt = the basic ingredients for any of the quick breads.
  • If I add cocoa powder, I have brownies for dessert
  • If I add cinnamon and sugar I have a breakfast treat.
The operative words in that column heading is "I MUST". These are the things that I have to have in my pantry to make the foods I'm used to making. I make sure that I never run out of these ingredients because they are basic to everything I personally do.

I don't know of anyone who has unlimited storage in their kitchen, so you should come up with a list (like the one above) that is suitable for your own basic style of cooking. Give yourself that challenge - come up with 26 ingredients and see if you could feed yourself for a week. In my case I know I have to keep 2 cartons of chicken broth and have at least a dozen eggs on hand. Each pantry is different, and should be different. You start with the basics and just add those wonderful extras from meal to meal.
